SSC Case Update: Calcutta High Court Says Yes to 44,000 New Teacher Jobs in West Bengal

SSC Case Update: The long wait is finally over. All legal entanglements concerning the new notification for the recruitment of nearly 44,000 teachers in the state have been cleared, thanks to the intervention of the Calcutta High Court. With Justice Sougata Bhattacharya’s division bench refusing to grant a stay on the recruitment process, there are no further obstacles for the School Service Commission (SSC) to commence its new hiring drive. The online application process is set to begin on June 16.

Case Background

The SSC recently issued a notification for the recruitment of approximately 44,000 teachers. The commission aimed to complete this process by December 31, adhering to the deadline set by the Supreme Court. However, several candidates from the 2016 recruitment cycle filed a case in the High Court against this new notification, demanding an urgent hearing. Their plea was that issuing a new notification without completing the old recruitment process was not legally sound.

High Court’s Observation and Verdict

During the hearing at the vacation bench, Justice Sougata Bhattacharya clearly stated that since the online application process is scheduled to start on June 16, the court will not interfere at this stage. If any issues arise, the case can be heard in July. In essence, the High Court’s single bench has refused to impose any stay on the recruitment process.

This verdict removes all legal hurdles from the Calcutta High Court for the SSC’s new recruitment notification. Commission officials have stated that the recruitment will be conducted as per the Supreme Court’s directives, and candidates can start applying online from June 16.

Relief for Aspirants

The High Court’s decision has brought relief to lakhs of new job aspirants in the state. They were disheartened by the prolonged halt in the teacher recruitment process. The news of the process restarting has given them a new ray of hope. It now remains to be seen how transparently and efficiently the SSC can conduct this massive recruitment drive.
