No PIN Required! UPI’s New Rule Is Live From October 8th, Here’s How to Use It

UPI PIN-Free: A new era has begun in the world of digital transactions. Ending the wait, the much-discussed PIN-free transaction system for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been rolled out nationwide from October 8, 2025. Introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), this rule has now made digital payments easier, faster, and much more secure than before for millions of users. Let’s find out exactly how this new system works and how you can take advantage of it.
How Does This New PIN-Free System Work?
In this new method, you no longer need your 4 or 6-digit secret PIN to authorize transactions. Instead, your smartphone’s biometric technology is being used. This means you can now complete transactions using your fingerprint or facial recognition (face scan).
Whenever you go to make a payment, you will see the new biometric option alongside the traditional option of entering a PIN:
- Fingerprint: Your payment will be completed instantly just by touching the designated finger to your phone’s sensor.
- Facial Recognition: You can also authorize the transaction by looking at your phone’s front camera to have your face scanned.
Since this biometric data is linked to your Aadhaar database, it is an extremely secure method. As everyone’s fingerprint and facial structure are unique, the possibility of identity fraud in this system is close to zero.

Currently, you can transact up to a maximum of five thousand rupees daily using this PIN-free biometric method. This limit is sufficient for frequent small-value purchases. NPCI has stated that based on the popularity and success of this system, an increase in this limit may be considered in the future.
Additionally, the facility to set or reset the UPI PIN through Aadhaar-based facial recognition has also been introduced. Previously, if you forgot your UPI PIN, providing your debit card details was mandatory to reset it. Now, you can create a new PIN just by scanning your face, which makes the entire process much more convenient.
The Benefits of This Change
The main objective of this revolutionary change was to make digital payments more accessible and secure for people from all walks of life in India. Many people, especially senior citizens, do not feel comfortable remembering or using a PIN. The biometric method has removed that barrier. Moreover, incidents of fraud like PIN theft or shoulder surfing (peeking at the PIN from behind) have also been completely prevented as a result. This new chapter, which began on October 8th, is undoubtedly steering India’s digital economy in a new direction.
