SIR Form Relative Name: Whose Name to Write as Relative in SIR Form? Know the Correct Rules

SIR Form Relative Name: Ever since the process of submitting the SIR (Special Summary Revision) form began, significant confusion has arisen regarding a specific field. Particularly for applicants whose names are not on the 2002 voter list and who are applying based on their parents’ or grandparents’ details from that list, there are conflicting opinions on what to write in the ‘Relative’s Name’ and ‘Relationship’ columns. To clear this confusion, it is crucial to understand the difference between the online and offline forms.

Conflicting Opinions Among BLOs

The issue has led to various interpretations among Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in different areas, further confusing the applicants. Mainly, three different opinions are circulating:

  • Opinion 1 (Most Common): About 70% of BLOs suggest that the applicant should write the name mentioned as the ‘relative’s name’ in the 2002 voter list corresponding to the person (father, mother, grandfather, grandmother) they are citing. The relationship mentioned between those two individuals in the 2002 list (e.g., Father) should also be written in the ‘Relationship’ column.

  • Opinion 2: Some BLOs hold a completely different view. According to them, the ‘Relationship’ column should state the applicant’s relationship with the person from the 2002 list (i.e., whether that person is their father, mother, grandfather, or grandmother).

  • Opinion 3: Another group of BLOs supports the first rule but with an additional suggestion. They advise that if the SIR is being done using a grandfather’s or grandmother’s name, the applicant should mention ‘Grandfather’ or ‘Grandmother’ in brackets next to the relationship.

The Solution in the Online Form

An analysis of the online form provides a clear picture and helps resolve this confusion. In the online portal, when a user selects the ‘My Parent Name… (Father, Mother, Grandfather, Grandmother) exists in Electoral Roll’ option, a few things become clear. Upon searching with the serial number from the 2002 list, the ancestor’s name, EPIC number, and the ‘Relative Name’ as per the 2002 list are auto-populated. However, the relationship often shows as ‘Other’.

This is where the online form differs significantly. It has an additional option that is absent in the offline form: “Select Your Relationship with Above Mentioned Relative”. This drop-down menu requires the applicant to specify their relationship with the person from the 2002 list (e.g., Father, Mother, Grandfather, Grandmother).

Offline Form Issues and Advice

The primary cause of all this confusion is the absence of a dedicated column in the offline form to specify the applicant’s relationship with the ancestor. The offline form only has fields for “Relative’s Name” and “Relationship,” which people are being told to fill as per the 2002 list.

Since the online form explicitly asks for the applicant’s relationship, it indicates that this information is what the authorities are ultimately interested in. However, when submitting the offline form, it is wise to follow the advice of your local BLO. If they ask you to mention the relationship (e.g., Grandfather/Grandmother) in brackets, it is best to do so. For those whose own names are in the 2002 list, there is no issue; they can fill in the details as per the old list.
