Assembly Elections: West Bengal Election Dates Announced: EC Releases Schedule and Strict Rules for 5 States
Assembly Elections: The Election Commission of India has officially completed its preparations for the upcoming assembly elections across five key states, bringing an end to a long wait. In this massive democratic exercise, over 17.5 crore citizens will step out to cast their valuable votes. To manage such a gigantic polling operation smoothly, the commission is deploying more than 2.5 million polling officials. Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar recently outlined the comprehensive blueprint and dates for these mega polls.
West Bengal Election Schedule and Youth Voters
With the current assembly’s term concluding on May 7, West Bengal is geared up for a two-phase election to decide the fate of its 294 constituencies. The Election Commission announced that the initial phase is scheduled for April 23, covering 152 seats. The remaining 142 constituencies will go to polls in the second phase on April 29.
West Bengal boasts a massive electorate of 6.44 crore. Interestingly, the youth will play a decisive role in forming the next government. Official statistics reveal that there are roughly 1.31 crore voters in the 20 to 29 age bracket, along with approximately 5.23 lakh first-time voters aged between 18 and 19.
Strict Mobile Ban and Special Booth Facilities
To ensure a smooth, comfortable, and inclusive voting experience, the commission has mandated essential facilities at every single polling station. These include adequate drinking water, clean toilets, and wheelchairs. Senior citizens will receive special attention, with all voting booths set up on the ground floor and dedicated seating benches provided for their comfort.
However, citizens must be aware of a stringent security protocol: carrying mobile phones inside the polling booths is completely banned. Voters will have to deposit their devices at specially designated counters outside before entering the booth, and they can collect them only after safely casting their ballots.
Polling Details for Other States
Alongside West Bengal, elections will take place in four other regions. Single-phase elections will be held in Assam (126 seats), Kerala (140 seats), and Puducherry on April 9. Tamil Nadu will vote for its 234 assembly seats in a single phase on April 23.
When will the final outcomes be revealed? The Election Commission confirmed that the counting of votes for all five states will be conducted simultaneously on May 4. Regarding the massive voter base in these states, the official data highlights that 5.67 crore citizens are eligible to vote in Tamil Nadu, 2.70 crore in Kerala, 2.50 crore in Assam, and 9.44 crore in Puducherry.
