PAN Card Rules: A major update has emerged for citizens looking to apply for or correct their PAN cards. Starting April 1, the Income Tax Department is set to introduce strict changes to the PAN card issuance process. Until now, possessing an Aadhaar card was enough to smoothly complete the application. However, from the upcoming financial year, relying solely on Aadhaar will no longer be permitted. Applicants will have to adhere to additional verification steps to establish their identity. Since a PAN card is essential for everything from daily banking tasks to filing income tax returns, it is vital to be aware of these new regulations in advance.

The Reason Behind the Change

Currently, up until March 31, obtaining a PAN card is quite straightforward through a simplified e-KYC process that requires only Aadhaar details. However, the central government believes it is crucial to maintain absolute transparency in identity documents and prevent any potential data errors. To achieve this, the verification process is being made significantly more stringent starting next financial year. Additional Documents Now Mandatory

According to the new guidelines, simply providing Aadhaar will not suffice. Applicants must now submit specific proof of their Date of Birth alongside their PAN application. Any of the following official documents can be submitted:

  • Birth Certificate of the applicant.
  • Voter ID Card or Passport.
  • Valid Driving License.
  • Madhyamik (10th standard) admit card or marksheet.

In special cases or in the absence of other documents, a legal affidavit may also be accepted as proof.

Zero Tolerance for Name Mismatches

Another critical point for applicants is the absolute accuracy of their details. The name entered in the PAN card application must perfectly match the exact name recorded on the Aadhaar card. Even the slightest discrepancy or spelling mistake will result in the immediate rejection of the application. Therefore, cross-checking spellings before submission is absolutely necessary.

Discontinuation of Old Forms

Those planning to use the existing application forms must act swiftly. From April 1, the Income Tax Department will completely scrap all older PAN card form formats. A brand new form will be introduced in its place. Consequently, anyone applying after March 31 will have to use the new form, adhere to the new rules, and attach the extra documentation. While experts acknowledge that this new system will bolster security, they also warn that the entire application process will become more time-consuming for the general public. To avoid these new hurdles, completing any pending PAN-related work within this month is highly recommended.
