18 Months DA Arrears: Will 18 Months DA Arrears Be Paid? Centre Announces Final Decision in Parliament
18 Months DA Arrears: A highly crucial update has emerged, putting an end to the long wait of central government employees and pensioners. For many months, millions of active and retired workers were hoping that their withheld financial dues from the pandemic era would soon be credited to their bank accounts. However, through a recent announcement, the government has virtually put an end to these speculations. When questioned on this matter in the Lok Sabha, the Finance Ministry made it crystal clear that they have no plans to clear those pending dues.
The Centre’s Final Stance on DA Arrears
The issue of these financial dues has been raised repeatedly during parliamentary sessions. Yet, every time, the Centre has maintained the same position. The Finance Ministry stated that paying the 18 months of pending Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) from the COVID-19 period is currently not considered feasible. It was clarified that this decision was taken to ease the immense pressure on the government exchequer. Consequently, it is clear that the government is not considering paying these arrears for the time being.
Why Were These Funds Frozen?
Impact of the Pandemic: When the coronavirus struck the nation in early 2020, the country’s economy faced an extreme crisis. Government finances were severely strained during that period.
Suspended Installments: To manage this unexpected economic downturn, the government suspended the hikes in Dearness Allowance for January and July 2020, as well as January 2021. A total of three installments were withheld, covering a continuous period of 18 months.
Employee Unions’ Demands and Future Steps
Various employee unions are naturally disappointed by the government’s decision. They strongly believe that the Dearness Allowance is a rightful entitlement of the employees, and withholding it for such a long period is absolutely unjustified. With the current financial year approaching its end, this demand had gained even more momentum.
- Context of the 8th Pay Commission: Several organizations have already raised the demand that as soon as the 8th Pay Commission is implemented in the country, the government must simultaneously clear this 18-month pending amount to the employees.
It remains to be seen whether the government will reconsider its decision in the future amid mounting pressure from a massive workforce.
