Aadhaar Card Update: Missing Father or Husband Name in Aadhaar? Know the Easy and New Rule to Fix It at Home

Aadhaar Card Update: While applying for a driving license or during passport verification, many individuals suddenly realize that their Father’s or Husband’s name (C/O details) is missing from their Aadhaar card. This issue often causes panic, especially for those who have recently linked their mobile numbers or updated their addresses. However, there is no need to worry. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has a specific provision to resolve this. You no longer need to stand in long queues at Aadhaar centers; you can fix this issue from the comfort of your home using the ‘Head of Family’ (HOF) based update method.

What is the Head of Family (HOF) Based Update?

Previously, Aadhaar addresses could only be updated using valid address proof in the applicant’s own name. However, under the new rules, even if you do not possess any document in your name, you can update your address and restore the C/O section using the Aadhaar card and consent of your Head of Family (Father, Mother, or Husband). Through this process, the address present on the Head of Family’s Aadhaar will be reflected on the applicant’s card. It is mandatory for both the applicant and the Head of Family to have their mobile numbers linked to their respective Aadhaar cards.

Step-by-Step Application Process

To complete this process, you need to follow a few specific steps on the official UIDAI portal. Here is a detailed guide:

  1. Login Process: First, visit the ‘myaadhaar’ portal. Enter your Aadhaar number and the Captcha code, then click on ‘Send OTP’. Login using the OTP received on your mobile.
  2. Select Option: After the dashboard opens, click on the ‘Address Update’ option. You will see two choices; select ‘Update Address using Head of Family (HOF) based Aadhaar’.
  3. HOF Details: Enter the Aadhaar number of the person (Father or Husband) whose reference you want to use. As soon as you enter the number, the system will automatically display the last few digits of their mobile number, confirming you have entered the correct details.
  4. Relationship & Proof: Select your relationship with that person (e.g., Father, Husband) from the drop-down menu. Next, scan and upload the supporting document as proof of relationship.

After uploading the documents, you must pay the specified online fee (stated as Rs 75 in the source). Once the payment is successful, an SRN number will be generated, which you must save carefully.

Approval by Head of Family (Crucial Step)

Your application process is not complete until the Head of Family (HOF) approves it. This is a critical step:

  • The Head of Family must log in to the portal using their own Aadhaar number.
  • They need to navigate to the ‘My Head of Family (HOF) Requests’ option at the bottom of the dashboard.
  • Your application’s SRN will be visible there. They must click the ‘Accept’ button to give consent for the processing to begin.

Note: If the Head of Family does not accept the request within the stipulated time or clicks on ‘Decline’, the application will be rejected, and the payment will not be refunded.

Using the Self Declaration Form

For those who do not have a Birth Certificate or Marriage Certificate as proof of relationship, UIDAI allows the use of a ‘Self Declaration’ form in a specific format. This form must mention the Head of Family’s name, Aadhaar number, address, and their relationship with the applicant, along with the HOF’s signature. Uploading this form is a valid alternative to standard documents.
