Aadhaar Card Update Rules: The Aadhaar card is now an essential identity document in our lives. From banking services to accessing government schemes, it is required almost everywhere. However, there are often errors in the information on our Aadhaar cards, or details may need to be changed over time. To address this, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has established specific rules for updating Aadhaar card information. In this article, we will discuss in detail how many times you can change your name, address, date of birth, and other details on your Aadhaar card.

Contents
  • Name Change
  • Date of Birth (DOB) Change
  • Gender Change
  • Address Change
  • Mobile Number and Email ID
  • Photograph Change

Name Change

The opportunity to change your name on an Aadhaar card is limited. According to UIDAI rules, an individual can change their name only twice in their lifetime. Minor corrections, such as spelling mistakes or partial name changes, fall under this limit. This rule also applies to women who wish to change their surname after marriage. If a third name change is required for a special reason, an application must be made through an “exception handling process.” This requires visiting a UIDAI Regional Office and submitting valid reasons and proof, such as a Gazette Notification.

Date of Birth (DOB) Change

Date of birth is a critical piece of information, and the rules for changing it are quite strict. You can change the date of birth on your Aadhaar card only once in your lifetime. If there was an error in the DOB during the initial Aadhaar enrolment, you are given one chance to correct it. For this, you must submit valid proof, such as a birth certificate or another government-approved document. A second change is possible only in exceptional circumstances with approval from a UIDAI Regional Office.

Gender Change

As per UIDAI regulations, you can update your gender information only once. If there is an error in this information or a change is needed, it can be corrected one time. A second change would require special approval and may require submitting supporting documents like a medical certificate or a Transgender ID card.

Address Change

Changing a permanent or current address is a common requirement. Many people move from one city to another for work or other reasons, necessitating an address update. Keeping this in mind, UIDAI has not set any limit on changing the address. This means you can update the address on your Aadhaar card as many times as you need. You just need to provide a valid proof of your new address.

Mobile Number and Email ID

Similar to the address, there is no specific limit on changing your mobile number and email ID. You can update your mobile number or email address as many times as required.

Photograph Change

There is also no limit on changing the photograph on your Aadhaar card. As our appearance can change over time, you can update your photo as often as you like. To do this, you will need to visit a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Knowing these rules will help you avoid any issues when updating your Aadhaar card details. Simply visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the necessary documents to make the process smooth and easy.
