Some new features have recently been added to the official Aadhaar app on the Google Play Store. As a result of this update, customers can now apply for a mobile number change using their smartphones. However, UIDAI has imposed some strict conditions to avail of this facility, which are essential to know:

• Prerequisite: This facility is applicable only to those customers who already have an existing mobile number linked to their Aadhaar card.
• New Link Not Possible: If no mobile number has ever been linked to your Aadhaar, you cannot link it for the first time through this app. In that case, you must visit an Aadhaar Center to link it via biometrics.
• Other Updates: Although the app shows options for updating name, address, and email ID, currently they display “Coming Soon.” This means only the mobile number update feature is operational at this moment.

Step-by-Step Process to Update Mobile Number at Home

Follow the steps below carefully to update your mobile number from your smartphone without visiting an Aadhaar Center:

1. App Install and Login: First, download or update the Aadhaar app on your mobile. Then, login using your currently registered mobile number. It is vital to remember that you must login with the number that is currently linked, not the new one you wish to add.
2. Select Service: After logging into the app, go to the ‘Service’ section. You will see the ‘My Aadhaar Update’ option. Click on the ‘Mobile Number Update’ option there.
3. Enter Information: Here, you will be asked to enter the new mobile number. Type the new number you want to link accurately and complete the OTP verification process.
4. Face Authentication: This is the most critical step of the process. To verify your identity, the app will perform Face Authentication. You need to stand in sufficient light and blink your eyes looking at the camera as per the app’s instructions.
5. Payment: After successful identity verification, you need to pay a fee of Rs 75 online. Once the payment is successful, your application will be submitted.

Timeline and Warning

After the application and payment process are successfully completed, an SRN number will be generated. Using this number, you can check the status later through the app itself. Generally, it may take about 30 days for the entire process to be completed and the new number to be updated in the system.

Special Caution: When using the app, ensure that the old SIM card linked to your Aadhaar is present in your phone or you have access to receive OTPs on it during login. If you login using Face ID or another number, the update option will not be visible.
