West Bengal Government Releases 80 Crore Crop Insurance Compensation to Farmers Under Bangla Shasya Bima Scheme

Bangla Shasya Bima: Great news has arrived for the farmers of West Bengal. The state government has officially started disbursing compensation under the Bangla Shasya Bima (BSB) scheme directly to farmers’ bank accounts. In a move to support those affected by crop loss, a total fund of ₹80 Crore has been released. Many beneficiaries have already started receiving SMS notifications regarding the credit of funds.

Announcement from Singur

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee initiated the payout process from a public meeting in Singur on January 28, 2026. By pressing a button, she commenced the direct transfer of funds to the beneficiaries.

• Beneficiaries: More than 2.35 lakh farmers across the state are set to benefit from this tranche of payments.

Who is Eligible for This Payout?

The compensation is primarily targeted at farmers who suffered crop damage during the 2025 Kharif season.

• Reason for Claim: Farmers whose paddy cultivation was severely affected due to untimely heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions in 2025 are receiving this aid.
• Payment Mode: The money is being transferred via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring it reaches the farmers’ bank accounts directly without intermediaries.

SMS Notifications and Verification

As the disbursement begins, farmers are receiving confirmation messages on their registered mobile numbers. These messages are being sent on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Govt. of West Bengal, and the current insurance partner, SBI General Insurance. The SMS explicitly states that the amount is being credited as compensation for paddy crop damage during the Kharif 2025 season due to natural calamities.

How to Check Payment Status?

Unlike previous terms with other insurance providers (like Bajaj Allianz), there is currently no online facility to check the payment status for SBI General Insurance claims.

• Timeline: Farmers who have received the message can expect the funds to reflect in their accounts within 1 to 7 days.
• Amount: The compensation varies significantly based on the land size and the percentage of crop loss, ranging from ₹1,000 to over ₹1,20,000.

Application for Rabi Season

While the compensation for the previous season is being cleared, the process for the upcoming season is already underway. Forms for the 2026 Rabi season crop insurance are currently being accepted. Farmers are strongly advised to download, fill out, and submit the insurance forms promptly to ensure eligibility for future compensation in case of crop failure.
