Big Changes in WB Higher Secondery Question Pattern What is the New ‘2x’ Formula?

WB Higher Secondery Question Pattern: The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has finally released an important notification regarding the question paper pattern for the Semester 4 examination. This notification (Memo No: L/PR/553/25), signed by the Council’s President, Prof. (Dr.) Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, brings great news for students. From now on, double alternatives will be provided for questions in all subjects.
What is the New ‘2x’ Formula?
According to the new rule issued by the WBCHSE, the ‘2x’ formula will be followed in the examinations for all subjects of the 4th Semester. In simple terms, this means that for the number of questions a student needs to answer from a specific unit or topic (represented by ‘x’), double that number of questions will be provided as alternatives.
Let’s understand with an example:
- If 1 question needs to be answered from a topic, 2 questions will be provided.
- If 2 questions need to be answered, 4 questions will be provided as alternatives.
- Similarly, to answer 3 questions, a total of 6 questions will be given.
Most importantly, these alternative questions will be from the same topic or unit. This means a question from one chapter will not be given as an alternative to a question from another chapter.
Sample Question Paper Structure
For the convenience of students, the council has also published a sample question paper structure to provide clarity. This sample clearly explains how the new rule will be implemented for questions of different marks.
According to the sample:
- 2-mark questions: If 2 two-mark questions need to be answered from a topic, a total of 4 questions will be given, from which any 2 can be chosen.
- 5-mark questions: If 1 five-mark question needs to be answered, 2 questions will be provided as alternatives.
- 10-mark questions: Similarly, for 1 ten-mark descriptive question, 2 questions will be provided to choose from.
Other Important Information
- Previous Rules Superseded: The council has stated that this new general formula will override any other question pattern notified by the Council earlier.
- Special Exception for Language Subjects: In language subjects, for unseen questions (such as essays, email writing, etc.), more than two alternatives may be provided to the examinees.
This new rule is expected to significantly reduce the examination pressure on students. Having the opportunity to choose preferred questions will allow them to easily answer from the chapters they have prepared well, increasing their chances of scoring better in the exam.
