CBSE Class 10 Basic Maths Students Can Now Opt for Standard Maths in Class 11: New Rule and Its Impact

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently announced a significant decision that will further facilitate the academic path for students who opted for Basic Mathematics in Class 10. According to the new rule, these students will now be eligible to choose Standard Mathematics in Class 11, a provision that was not available previously. This change has generated considerable interest among students and is being viewed as a positive step in educational circles.

Previously, students who chose ‘Basic Mathematics’ (Subject Code 241) out of the two mathematics options in Class 10 were not permitted to take ‘Standard Mathematics’ (Subject Code 041) in Class 11. Only ‘Applied Mathematics’ was available to them. However, as per the new CBSE directive, students passing with Basic Mathematics will also get the opportunity to study Standard Mathematics in Class 11 from the academic session 2025-26 onwards.

However, a condition has been applied. This transition will be allowed only if the Head of the Institution/School principal is satisfied that the student possesses the aptitude and ability to cope with the rigour of Standard Mathematics. The school authority’s assessment will be considered final in this regard.

Why This Change?

The primary objective behind this CBSE decision is to offer greater academic flexibility to students. It is often observed that some students develop an interest in higher-level mathematics after Class 10, or they realize the necessity of Standard Mathematics for their future educational and career paths. This new rule provides a significant opportunity for such students. This relaxation was initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and was continued in subsequent years. The current decision upholds that continuity.
