Will DA Case Verdict Be In January? Employee Leaders Gives Big Hint Before Supreme Court Reopens
DA Case Verdict: As 2025 draws to a close, the anticipation among West Bengal state government employees continues to rise. When will the verdict on the Dearness Allowance (DA) case be delivered? Will the employees finally receive DA at the central rate as demanded? All eyes are currently fixed on the Supreme Court’s judgment. While the Supreme Court is presently observing its winter vacation, questions abound regarding whether the verdict will be delivered in the New Year. Amidst this, Malay Mukhopadhyay, General Secretary of the Confederation of State Government Employees, has shared a significant update regarding the potential timeline of the verdict.
Could Good News Arrive in January?
The Supreme Court is currently on winter break and is scheduled to reopen on January 5. The pressing question remains: will the DA case verdict be announced immediately after the court reopens? In a recent interview, Malay Mukhopadhyay expressed hope that the case might see a resolution at the beginning of the New Year.
He stated, “The verdict could come in the first week of January when the Supreme Court reopens, or it might be delivered subsequently. We estimate that the judgment might not have been fully written yet. The drafting of the verdict could be completed during this winter vacation. Therefore, there is a strong possibility that the judgment will be published within the first or second week of January.”
Uncertainty and Legal Procedures Surrounding the Verdict
Predicting the exact date of the judgment remains difficult. Mr. Mukhopadhyay clarified that it is impossible to know beforehand exactly which day the Supreme Court will deliver the verdict. However, as per procedure, the petitioners will likely be informed only one or two days prior to the announcement.

Long Wait and Leaders’ Surprise
After much delay, the final hearing of the DA case concluded in the Supreme Court on September 8. The hearing was conducted before the bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice P.K. Mishra, and the judgment was reserved. Since then, three months have passed without an announcement.
Shyamal Mitra, another top leader of the ‘Confederation of State Government Employees’, expressed surprise at this delay. He remarked, “We are surprised that the verdict has not been delivered for so long, especially considering the speed at which the apex court conducted the hearings and the way the judges raised questions challenging the state government’s attitude.” He further added, “Actually, we are all just waiting for the court’s order.”
Current Status of the Case
The demand for Dearness Allowance at central rates by West Bengal government employees has been a long-standing issue. Moving from the Calcutta High Court, the matter is now sub-judice in the Supreme Court. Since the hearing concluded last September, the judgment has been kept reserved. This specific bench is set to deliver the final verdict. It remains to be seen whether the long wait of the employee community will end this coming January once the court reopens. From state government workers to pensioners, everyone is now keeping a close watch on the New Year calendar and the Supreme Court’s cause list.
