HS Exam New Rule: Revolutionary Change in Higher Secondary, Exams Twice a Year in the State!

HS Exam New Rule: A historic change is coming to the Higher Secondary education system of West Bengal. Starting from 2026, the Higher Secondary examination will be held twice a year instead of once. The State Education Department has announced this new examination system, which is being implemented by a state for the first time in India. This new system will commence from 2025.
Details of the New Examination System
This new structure for the Higher Secondary examination is believed to help reduce the pressure on students and aid in the proper evaluation of merit. Let’s take a look at the key features of the new system:
- Introduction of a Semester System: Under the new rule, the examination will be divided into two parts or semesters. The first phase of the exam will be held in September, and the second phase will be in March.
- Outline of the First Phase Examination:
- Schedule: The first phase examination will begin on September 8th and will continue until September 22nd.
- Number of Examinees: Approximately 6.6 lakh (660,000) candidates are expected to participate in this first-phase examination.
- Question Format: This phase of the exam will be entirely based on MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), and answers will be given on an OMR sheet. As a result, the traditional method of answer script evaluation will not be necessary, and results can be published quickly.
- Second Phase Examination: The second phase of the examination will be held in March and will likely be based on descriptive questions.
- Final Result: The final marksheet or result will be prepared by combining the marks obtained in both phases of the examination.
Experts believe that this move by the state government has been made in line with the National Education Policy. It is hoped that this new system will encourage students to stay engaged in their studies throughout the year and will place more emphasis on concepts rather than rote learning.
