Details of the Main Case

The diary number for the main case concerning the mandatory TET for teachers is 3646 of 2018. The case was originally filed in 2018 under the name ‘Anjuman Ishad Etalim Trust vs. State of Maharashtra’. The final judgment in this case was delivered on 19/04/2025 by the bench of the Hon’ble Justice Dipankar Datta. Following this judgment, several related review petitions have been filed, and the matter has been handed over to the Hon’ble Chief Justice.

West Bengal’s Role

The miscellaneous application filed by the state of West Bengal has the diary number 675, 2025. The petitioner is Bishwanath Das (vs. State of Maharashtra). This application was recently filed on 27/10/2025. Through this application, the original judgment of the Supreme Court dated 19/04/2025, which made TET mandatory, has been challenged.

Furthermore, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal has announced that the state government will also be filing a review petition against this verdict in the coming days. The state government will appeal for a modification of the order.

A total of 18 cases connected to the main case are showing a ‘Challenged’ status. Additionally, cases from the Maharashtra High Court (dated 12/01/2017 and 15/01/2015) that were challenged in the Supreme Court are also linked with this matter.
