Major Reshuffle in Calcutta High Court: What’s Next for the 32,000 Teachers?

Calcutta High Court: The roster of cases has been changed in the Calcutta High Court. Several changes have been made to the responsibilities of the judges in charge of cases in various benches. As a result of this change, from now on, the Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Ritobrata Kumar Mitra will hear education-related cases. This change will be effective from today, i.e., July 22, 2025.

New Justices in Charge of Education Cases

According to the recent roster change in the Calcutta High Court, education-related cases (Group Two) will now be heard by the Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Ritobrata Kumar Mitra. Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty has prior experience in hearing such cases, which is an important aspect of this change.

At the same time, the Division Bench of Justice Somen Sen and Justice Apurba Sinha Roy will now hear Group Eight cases. This includes cases related to the new SSC rules of the state government and the second SLST judgment.

Changes in Single Benches as Well

Changes have been made not only in the division benches but also in the single benches in charge of education-related cases.

  • Cases related to Madrasa, Primary, Para-teacher, and Secondary education will now be heard by Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj.
  • Justice Sougata Bhattacharya will now only hear cases related to Secondary and Higher Secondary education.

The Case of the Cancellation of 32,000 Primary Teachers’ Jobs

One of the most talked-about cases in the Calcutta High Court is the case of the cancellation of the jobs of 32,000 primary teachers. No change has been made in the responsibility of this case. The hearing of this case will continue in the bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty. The Chief Justice had earlier assigned the responsibility of this case to Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty.

The hearing of this case is almost in its final stages. The arguments of the lawyers for the affected parties are almost over. It is expected that the hearing process of this case will be completed within a few days. It has been specially mentioned in the video that even if all other rosters change, the bench of this particular case is unlikely to change, unless there is a serious unexpected event or the judge voluntarily recuses himself.

This roster change marked the beginning of a new chapter in the judicial process of the Calcutta High Court. Now it remains to be seen how much this change will speed up the settlement of cases and how much the litigants will benefit.
