New Post Office Rules: Registered Post to Merge with Speed Post, Major Change in Post Office Regulations

New Post Office Rules: The Indian Postal Department has taken a significant step to modernize its services and provide a better customer experience. From September 1, 2025, the Registered Post and Speed Post services will be merged and offered as a single service. As a result of this change, all domestic registered mail will now be treated as Speed Post and will receive services accordingly. Let’s learn more about this new rule and its implications.
Why was this decision made?
According to the Postal Department, the main objective of this initiative is to make the postal service process simpler and more transparent. Both Registered Post and Speed Post had very similar features. While Speed Post is known for fast delivery, Registered Post was used for secure and proof-based delivery. By merging the two services, customers will receive a stronger and improved service with faster delivery and a much-improved tracking system. This will make it easier for customers to track their parcels and stay informed about their mail’s exact location.
What changes are coming from September 1, 2025?
Several important changes will come into effect with this new rule, which customers need to be aware of:
- Single Service: Registered Post labels will no longer be available. Only the Speed Post service will be available for sending all domestic mail.
- Value-Added Services: The facilities previously available with Registered Post, such as Proof of Delivery and requiring the recipient’s signature, will now be added to Speed Post as ‘value-added’ services. Customers will have to pay an additional ₹10 for this.
- Improved Tracking: The current tracking system for Speed Post is highly advanced, allowing customers to track their parcel’s status in real-time. This facility will now be available to all customers.
New Service and Its Costs
Under the new rules, charges have been determined based on the parcel’s weight and distance. The detailed list is provided below:

201 to 500 grams | ₹ 30 | ₹ 50 | ₹ 60 | ₹ 80 | ₹ 90 |
If your parcel weighs more than 500 grams, you will have to pay an additional charge for every extra 500 grams or part thereof: ₹10 for local, ₹15 for up to 200 km, ₹30 for 201 to 1000 km, ₹40 for 1001 to 2000 km, and ₹50 for distances over 2000 km. Please note that all these charges are exclusive of tax.

Advice for Customers

This is particularly important for those who require written proof of delivery. This change is expected to make the postal service faster and more reliable.
