PAN Aadhaar Link: Effective April 1, 2026, the Income Tax Department has updated the technical workflow on its e-Filing portal for linking PAN and Aadhaar cards. For those who missed the previous deadlines, unlinked PAN cards are now officially inoperative. Taxpayers must pay a late fee of Rs 1,000 under Section 234H of the Income Tax Act to reactivate and link their PAN with Aadhaar. The step-by-step procedure and the crucial impact of this rule on West Bengal government employees are detailed below.
Table of Contents
Checking the PAN-Aadhaar Link Status
Before initiating any payment, it is essential to verify your current status.
- Visit the official Income Tax e-Filing portal (incometax.gov.in).
- Under the ‘Quick Links’ section on the homepage, click on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers, and click ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’ to see if they are already connected.
Impact on Government Employees
For West Bengal government employees and pensioners, maintaining an operative PAN is mandatory for seamless salary processing through the WBIFMS portal. An inoperative PAN leads to several complications:
- Higher TDS Deduction: Under Section 206AA of the Income Tax Act, an inoperative PAN mandates employers to deduct TDS at a higher rate of 20 percent on salaries.
- Blocked IT Returns & Refunds: Employees will not be able to file their Income Tax Returns (ITR), leading to stalled processing of any pending tax refunds.
- GPF and Banking Issues: An invalid KYC status due to an inactive PAN can block access to General Provident Fund (GPF) advances, festival advances, and standard banking services.
Procedure to Pay the Penalty (e-Pay Tax)
To reactivate the PAN, a mandatory fine of Rs 1,000 must be paid via the portal.
- Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ on the portal, enter your details, and click ‘Validate’.
- Proceed by selecting ‘Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax’.
- Enter your PAN twice and a working mobile number for OTP verification.
- Select the Assessment Year as 2026-27.
- Under ‘Type of Payment’, select ‘Other Receipts (500)’, and for the sub-type, choose ‘Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar’.
- Ensure the challan reflects Major Head 0021 and Minor Head 500. Pay the Rs 1,000 fee using Debit Card, Net Banking, or UPI.
- Once successful, download the challan receipt.
Final Steps to Complete the Linking
Paying the penalty does not automatically link the documents. The payment may take 1 to 4 hours to reflect on the portal.
- After the wait period, return to the ‘Link Aadhaar’ section and validate your details again.
- Once the payment is verified, enter your name and mobile number exactly as they appear on your Aadhaar card.
- Tick the appropriate consent boxes and submit the final OTP.
- The linking process will take approximately 48 hours to complete.
Important Warning
The name, gender, and date of birth on both the PAN and Aadhaar cards must match exactly. Even minor spelling mistakes or spacing errors will cause the linking request to fail. Ensure both documents have identical details before starting the process.
