PhonePe Launches Biometric Payment No PIN Required for UPI Transactions up to 5000 Rupees

PhonePe UPI Update: The landscape of digital transactions in India is evolving rapidly. From local grocery stores to cab bookings and food deliveries, UPI has become an indispensable part of daily life. However, the repetitive process of entering a UPI PIN for even the smallest transactions has been a friction point for many users. Addressing this, PhonePe has introduced a game-changing feature to streamline the payment process. Users can now complete specific transactions without the need to enter a PIN every time.

What is the Biometric Payment Feature?

PhonePe has rolled out biometric authentication, allowing users to authorize payments using their fingerprint or Face ID. This innovation leverages the smartphone’s native security hardware to validate transactions. According to the company, this move is designed to make the payment experience significantly faster, smoother, and hassle-free. It is particularly beneficial for users who frequently make payments on the go and want to avoid the tedium of typing a PIN in public spaces.

Transaction Limits Without PIN

If you frequently use UPI for small daily purchases, this update brings a major relief. PhonePe has confirmed that transactions up to ₹5,000 can now be completed without entering a UPI PIN. This means for everyday expenses like groceries, medicines, or snacks, a simple biometric scan will suffice. However, to ensure financial safety, transactions exceeding the ₹5,000 limit will still strictly require the traditional UPI PIN.

Security and Compatibility

Is it safe to pay without a PIN? The company assures users that security remains a top priority. In this new system, the smartphone’s built-in screen lock mechanism (fingerprint or face recognition) acts as a robust secondary factor of authentication (2FA). This ensures that while the process is faster, the security layers remain intact. Currently, this feature is exclusively available for Android smartphone users. iPhone users will have to wait a little longer as the rollout for iOS is planned for the future.

How to Activate This Feature

To enable biometric payments on your PhonePe app, follow these simple steps:

• Open the PhonePe app and navigate to your Profile section.
• Look for the “Manage Payments” option in the menu.
• Tap on the “Biometric Pay” icon.
• Enable biometric authentication for your linked bank account.

Note: During the initial setup, you will be required to authenticate using both your UPI PIN and your biometrics to confirm your identity. Once successfully set up, the phone’s fingerprint or face unlock system will serve as the verification key for transactions up to ₹5,000.
