RTO New Rules: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is gearing up to introduce significant changes to the regulations governing driving licenses and vehicle management across India. The central government aims to simplify the bureaucratic processes for citizens while simultaneously tightening the noose on traffic violators to ensure safer roads. The overarching goal is to transition towards a seamless online system, reducing the need for physical visits to Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).
Relief for Applicants Aged 40 to 60
In a major move to reduce hassle for citizens, the government is set to abolish the mandatory requirement of a medical certificate for individuals aged between 40 and 60 years. Previously, obtaining or renewing a driving license in this age bracket required a fitness certificate signed by a doctor. This old rule often forced people to spend unnecessary time and money, and it frequently led to dependency on middlemen or touts.
With the removal of this clause, the process of obtaining a license will become much faster and more transparent, directly benefiting a large section of the driving population.
Introduction of the ‘Penalty Point System’
Merely paying a fine for traffic violations will no longer be enough. To curb reckless driving, the government is implementing a new “Point System.” Under this rule, every traffic offense committed by a driver will attract a certain number of negative or penalty points on their driving license.
If a driver accumulates points beyond a specified threshold due to repeated offenses, their driving license will be suspended for a certain period, barring them from driving entirely. This system is designed to identify habitual offenders and remove them from the roads to ensure public safety.
Higher Insurance Premiums for Bad Driving
Your on-road behavior will now directly impact your wallet beyond just challans. The government is linking driving records to vehicle insurance premiums. If a driver has a poor track record with a high number of penalty points on their license, insurance companies will charge a higher premium during the policy renewal. Conversely, responsible drivers with clean records are likely to benefit from standard rates. This financial deterrent is expected to encourage citizens to drive more responsibly.
