School Holiday: School Holiday Extended Due to Bone Chilling Cold! Classes Suspended Till January 13, Check Detailed List
School Holiday: The severity of winter continues to escalate across North India, disrupting daily life with bone-chilling cold and dense fog. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is no immediate relief in sight, and the cold wave conditions are expected to persist for several more days. Keeping the health and safety of students in mind, multiple state governments have decided to extend school holidays. Strict directives have been issued by administrations in states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Tripura.
Holiday Extension in Punjab
Due to the intense cold wave, the Punjab government has decided to extend holidays for all schools in the state. State Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced via a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that considering the safety of students and staff, all schools will remain closed until January 13, 2026.
- Applicability: This order applies to all government, government-aided, recognized, and private schools in the state.
- Reopening: While schools were previously scheduled to reopen on January 8, they will now resume regular classes from January 14 as per the new directive.
Situation in Uttar Pradesh and NCR
In various districts of Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the National Capital Region (NCR), orders have been issued to close schools due to the severity of the cold and fog. The district administrations of Noida and Ghaziabad have suspended classes up to Class 8.
As per the orders of the District Magistrates of Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida):
- Classes from Nursery to Class 8 will remain suspended until January 10.
- This directive is applicable to all recognized schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, IB, and the UP Board.
- District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar stated that this decision was taken in compliance with the DM’s instructions, prioritizing student safety in the current weather conditions.
Cold Wave in Tripura
The northeastern state of Tripura is also witnessing a severe winter spell this year. With the mercury dipping 4 to 6 degrees Celsius below normal, cold wave conditions have gripped the region. Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that all government and private schools in the state will remain closed from January 6 to January 10 due to the intense cold. According to the Agartala Meteorological Centre, the state has been under the grip of a cold wave for the past week.

Updates from Other States
Winter vacations are already ongoing in Delhi. However, authorities have indicated that if the severe weather conditions persist, the duration of the holidays might be extended. Parents are advised to stay updated with official government notifications and school notices. Additionally, states like Bihar, Assam, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir are also taking measures to extend holidays or close schools due to dense fog and low visibility, which pose risks for school buses and student commutes. These precautionary measures aim to protect children from the health risks associated with the harsh weather and travel hazards during early morning hours.
