SIM Box Fraud: Cybercrime has evolved from petty scams into a sophisticated shadow industry. Every day, fraudsters devise new methods to bypass government regulations and conceal their identities, causing massive financial and emotional distress to victims. Normally, when you receive an international call, your phone displays a number with an international country code. However, scammers have found a way to bypass this. They use a technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to make calls over the internet. These internet calls are then routed through a device in India known as a “SIM Box.”

A SIM box is a piece of hardware that can hold hundreds of local SIM cards (from 100 to 500). When the international VoIP call reaches the SIM box, the device converts it and routes it through one of the local SIMs. As a result, the call appears on your phone as a regular local number, tricking you into answering it.

Why Are Scammers Using This Method?

• Anonymity: It makes it extremely difficult for law enforcement to trace the original caller’s location and identity.
• Low Cost: This method is significantly cheaper for criminals than making traditional international calls.

Fraudsters use this technology to execute a variety of scams, including:

• Digital Arrest: Posing as fake police or CBI officers to intimidate victims into paying large sums of money.
• Banking Fraud: Impersonating bank employees to trick people into revealing sensitive information like OTPs, CVVs, and PINs.
• Fake Offers: Luring victims with too-good-to-be-true loan offers or lottery prizes and asking for a “processing fee.”
• Customer Care Scams: Pretending to be customer service representatives from popular companies to steal personal and financial data.

Government Initiatives and How You Can Stay Safe

The Indian government is taking active measures to combat this menace. A portal named “Chakshu” has been launched under the Sanchar Saathi initiative, allowing citizens to report suspicious mobile numbers, fraudulent SMS, and scam calls. Police forces across the country are also raiding and dismantling these SIM box hubs.

However, personal vigilance is the best defense:

• Do not engage with calls from unknown numbers that make suspicious offers or threats.
• Never share your OTP, PIN, CVV, or any other confidential banking information with anyone over the phone.
• If you suspect a fraudulent call, immediately report the number on the Chakshu portal and inform your local cyber police.
