Tainted Teacher List: SSC Publishes List of Incompetent Teachers, but a New Controversy Arises

Tainted Teacher List: Finally, ending the wait, the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (SSC) has published a list of 1804 incompetent teachers. This notification was issued on August 30, 2025, primarily as a result of the Supreme Court’s order on August 28, 2025. The list has been made public in the context of the Bijoy Biswas case.
What’s in the List and What’s Not?
In the list published by the commission, the serial number, roll number, and name of the ineligible candidates have been mentioned. The list is divided into two columns, and the names of the candidates are arranged alphabetically on each page. However, a new controversy has erupted around this list. Several crucial pieces of information are missing here, which is bound to raise questions about transparency.
What’s Missing from the List:
- Subject: There is no mention of the subject for which the candidates were appointed.
- Level: It is also unclear at which level they were appointed – ninth-tenth or eleventh-twelfth.
- Type of Corruption: There is no information on whether the corruption involved OMR manipulation, inflated marks, appointment after the panel’s expiry, or some other method.
The absence of all this crucial information makes the list incomplete and makes it difficult to properly identify the candidates.
Debate and Discrepancy Over Numbers
The published list contains a total of 1804 names, which is slightly less than the figure provided by the state’s lawyer. Earlier, about 1900 “ineligible” candidates were mentioned. The original petitioners, who are on the waiting list, have questioned this numerical discrepancy. According to them, this list does not match the numbers provided by the CBI either.
The Calcutta High Court had previously expressed dissatisfaction with several lists submitted by the SSC. Discrepancies were noted in the number of ineligible candidates in the affidavits submitted by the commission to the court at various times, which had caused dissatisfaction for both the High Court and the Supreme Court.
What Does the Future Hold?
According to experts, this list may escalate the controversy instead of ending it. Since information regarding the type of corruption and subject-wise details is absent, doubts remain about which direction this case will take in the future. For now, the publication of this list has created a new stir in state politics and the education sector.
