Teacher Transfer: WBBSE Cancels Orders, Teachers to Revert to Previous Schools

Teacher Transfer: In a major development concerning the state’s teacher transfer process, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) issued a notification on June 13, 2025, cancelling several transfer orders for assistant teachers. As a result of this decision, all teachers who had already joined their new schools have been directed to immediately revert to their previous places of posting.

This directive has been issued following the withdrawal of transfer recommendations by the School Education Department and the West Bengal Central School Service Commission.

Which Transfer Orders Have Been Cancelled?

According to the Board’s notification, all transfer orders issued based on the following memos from 2023 have been withdrawn and cancelled with immediate effect:

  • Memo No. 269/Sec/Appt.-Cell/23, dated 17.08.2023
  • Memo No. 286/Sec/Appt.-Cell/23, dated 24.08.2023
  • Memo No. 305/Sec/Appt.-Cell/23, dated 13.09.2023
  • Memo No. 329/Sec/Appt.-Cell/23, dated 06.10.2023

What Else Does the Directive Say?

The notification explicitly states that all assistant teachers who joined new schools in compliance with the aforementioned orders must “revert back to their earlier place of posting”. The concerned District Inspectors of Schools (D.I. of Schools, S.E.) have been requested to ensure compliance with this directive accordingly.

Impact on Teachers

This sudden decision by the Board has caused significant turmoil within the state’s teaching community. Teachers who had relocated their residences or enrolled their children in new schools near their new workplaces now face considerable hardship. The future for these affected teachers remains uncertain as they await further clarification or subsequent steps from the education department.
