Train Chart Preparation Time: When is the Indian Railways Train Chart Prepared? Get Detailed Information

Train Chart Preparation Time: While traveling with Indian Railways, a common question that crosses every passenger’s mind is – when is the train chart prepared? The anxiety of whether a waitlisted ticket will get confirmed is often mixed with the excitement of the journey. In this post, we will discuss the train chart preparation schedule in detail, so that your next rail journey is smoother and free from worry.

The General Rule for Chart Preparation

Typically, the first reservation chart is prepared approximately four hours before the scheduled departure of the train. During this time, waitlisted tickets are confirmed, and passengers are allotted their seat numbers.

Chart Preparation Rules for Different Departure Times

However, the four-hour rule does not apply in all cases. The chart preparation time can vary depending on the train’s departure schedule.

  • For trains departing between 5 AM and 2 PM: If your train is scheduled to depart between 5 AM and 2 PM, the chart is prepared the previous night. Usually, you will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number by 9 PM. This allows passengers on early morning trains to know their ticket status the night before their journey.
  • For trains departing between 2 PM and 5 AM: If your train’s departure is after 2 PM and before 5 AM the next day, the chart is prepared about eight hours before departure. In this case as well, you will be notified about your ticket confirmation and seat number via SMS.

Final Chart and Current Availability

Even after the first chart is prepared, some seats may become vacant if passengers cancel their tickets. To fill these seats, Indian Railways prepares a final chart about 30 minutes before the train’s departure.

  • Current Availability: Seats that remain vacant or become available due to cancellations after the first chart is prepared are listed under “Currently Available.” Passengers can book these seats even a short while before the train departs. The names of those who book tickets during this window are included in the final chart.

We hope this information is helpful and clears up any confusion you may have about train chart preparation times. May your next train journey be a pleasant one!
