Voter Card Address: Change Voter Card Address Online from Home Know Rules for Submitting Form 8

Voter Card Address: With the release of the draft voter list by the Election Commission, citizens are rushing to correct or transfer their voter cards. Many people have changed their residence due to employment or marriage, but their voter cards still reflect their old addresses. There is no need to worry or stand in long queues anymore. It is now possible to change the address on your voter card easily from the comfort of your home using a smartphone.

The process of transferring a voter card from one assembly constituency to another, or from one village to another within the same constituency, is now completely digital. All you need is knowledge of the correct procedure and specific documents.

Initial Steps for Address Change

To change the address on your voter card, you must visit the Election Commission’s official portal, voters.gov.in. After logging in, you need to select ‘Form 8’. Remember, this form is used for all corrections and transfers related to the voter card. Use your mobile number to log in and select the ‘Self’ option. If you are applying on behalf of another family member, select the ‘Other Elector’ option and provide their EPIC number.

Shifting vs. Correction: Which One is for You?

Many applicants get confused about whether to choose ‘Correction of Entries’ or ‘Shifting of Residence’ while applying. It is crucial to be clear on this matter.

  • Shifting of Residence: If you have permanently moved from one place to another and there are no errors in your name, father’s name, or date of birth, you must select this option solely for changing the address.
  • Correction of Entries: Use this option only if you are staying at the current address but there is a mistake in the card’s data or spelling. This is not applicable for address changes.

Special Advice for Married Women: For address changes after marriage, first use the ‘Shifting of Residence’ option to transfer the voter card to the in-laws’ address. Once the card transfer is complete, if a surname change is required, fill out Form 8 again and choose the ‘Correction’ option to change the name.

Required Documents and Upload Process

You will need to upload specific documents as proof when applying for an address change. The documents must be in JPG format and within a 2MB file size limit. Below is a list of acceptable documents:

Document TypeExamples
Identity & Address ProofAadhaar Card, Passport, Driving License
Alternative ProofPanchayat Residential Certificate (if no other document exists for the new address)
For Married WomenMarriage Certificate and Panchayat Pradhan’s Certificate (scanned together)

Form Submission and Verification

After correctly selecting the new address details, i.e., State, District, and Assembly Constituency, type your full address in English. The system will automatically transliterate it into the local language (Bengali). If there are spelling errors, correct them using the on-screen keyboard. Finally, submit the application by verifying the OTP through the Aadhaar e-Sign process.

After submitting the application, you will receive a reference number, which can be used to check the status later. Usually, a BLO (Booth Level Officer) may visit your home for verification, or you may be called to the local BDO or Panchayat office for a hearing with original documents. If the documents are correct, your voter card will be transferred to the new address very quickly.
