7th Pay Commission: State Government Employees Demand Implementation from January 2026

7th Pay Commission: Alongside their ongoing fight for Dearness Allowance (DA) hikes, West Bengal state government employees have now raised the demand for the formation of the 7th Pay Commission. This new demand, recently put forward by the Sangrami Joutha Mancha, is expected to increase pressure on the state government. Let’s delve into the details of this demand.

Why the Demand for the 7th Pay Commission?

The Sangrami Joutha Mancha, an organization of state government employees, has demanded the formation of the 7th Pay Commission before the tenure of the 6th Pay Commission ends. According to them, the 6th Pay Commission’s term is set to conclude in December 2025. Therefore, they want the 7th Pay Commission to be constituted immediately and its recommendations to be implemented from January 2026.

What are the Key Demands?

The key demands presented by the Sangrami Joutha Mancha are as follows:

  • Immediate Commission Formation: The 7th Pay Commission must be formed without delay.
  • Report Submission Deadline: The commission must submit its report by December 2025.
  • Implementation Date: The recommendations of the commission should be effective from January 1, 2026.
  • Interim Relief: If there is any delay in publishing the 7th Pay Commission’s report, an interim relief (IR) of at least 50% of the basic pay must be provided from January 1, 2026.
  • Leadership of the Commission: The employees insist that the 7th Pay Commission must be headed by a retired judge. They allege that they faced significant financial losses and irregularities with the 6th Pay Commission because this rule was not followed.

Why the Concern?

According to the employees’ organizations, the implementation of the 6th Pay Commission was delayed by nearly four years, causing substantial financial harm to the state government employees. Therefore, they are raising these demands in advance to avoid a similar situation with the 7th Pay Commission. Furthermore, they allege that the state government has not yet implemented the Supreme Court’s order regarding pending Dearness Allowance (DA) under the 5th Pay Commission.

Increased Pressure on the Government

This new demand for the 7th Pay Commission, in addition to the ongoing struggle for Dearness Allowance (DA), will undoubtedly increase the pressure on the state government. With the Lok Sabha elections approaching, these demands from the state government employees could pose a new challenge for the government. It remains to be seen what steps the state government will take in response to these demands. If these demands are met, the state government employees will be significantly benefited financially.
