Academic Calendar 2026: Big Change In State Schools Strict Guidelines In Boards 2026 Academic Calendar
Academic Calendar 2026: The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has released a new and detailed Academic Calendar for the 2026 academic year to restore discipline and regularity in the state’s education system. In a directive signed by the Board’s Deputy Secretary (Academic) Ritabrata Chatterjee on December 29, 2025, a set of strict rules and schedules has been announced for all government, government-aided, and government-sponsored schools in the state. This directive is crucial for students, teachers, and school authorities alike.
Daily School Schedule and Attendance Rules
The Board has placed special emphasis on the importance of punctuality in daily school activities. According to the new guidelines, every school must strictly adhere to the designated schedule. The schedule prescribed by the Board is given below:
| Activity | Time |
|---|---|
| Appointed Hour | 10:35 AM |
| Prayer/Assembly | 10:40 AM to 10:50 AM |
| Class Start | From 10:50 AM |
| School Closing | 4:30 PM |
Attendance Rules: It is mandatory for the Headmaster and all assistant teachers to be present at the prayer assembly by 10:40 AM. If anyone enters the school after 10:40 AM, they will be marked as ‘Late’. Furthermore, if anyone arrives after 11:15 AM, they will be considered ‘Absent’ for that day.
Strict Guidelines for Teachers
To improve the quality of education and maintain the school environment, the Board has imposed several strict restrictions on teachers:
- School Leaving Time: Unless assigned specific government duty, no teacher is allowed to leave the school premises before 4:30 PM.
- Mobile Phone Ban: The use of mobile phones during teaching in classrooms or laboratories is completely prohibited as it distracts students. If mobile usage is absolutely necessary, written permission must be obtained from the Headmaster.
- Private Tuition: According to Rule 4, Sub-rule 6 of the Board, no teacher can be involved in private tuition for personal gain.
- Exam Duty: Teachers cannot evaluate answer scripts or perform any other tasks while performing invigilation duty in the examination hall.
Student Evaluation and Exam Schedule
For students, bringing smartphones or mobile phones to school has been strictly banned. Additionally, a specific framework for the entire year’s curriculum and evaluation has been outlined:
- 1st Summative: To be held in the first week of April.
- 2nd Summative: To be conducted in the first week of August.
- 3rd Summative: To be completed in the first week of December.
Working Days and Holidays Calculation: Out of total 365 days in 2026, excluding 52 Sundays and 65 holidays, schools will remain open for 248 days. Deducting 30 days for exams and other ancillary activities, 218 days have been allocated for regular classes or teaching.
Responsibilities of Headmasters
The role of Headmasters is pivotal in school management. The Board has clearly stated that the responsibility of implementing these rules lies with the Headmasters. Additionally, teachers must act as ‘Nodal Teachers’ to ensure students properly receive benefits from government schemes like Mid-Day Meal, Kanyashree, Shikshashree, Aikyashree, and Sabooj Sathi. Simultaneously, keeping the school premises tobacco-free and increasing awareness about cleanliness and health among students also fall under the Headmaster’s duties.
