The Finance Department of the Government of West Bengal has made significant changes to the holiday schedule for Bakrid. This update was issued via notification number 1814-F(P2) from Nabanna on May 22, 2026, following a review of the moon sighting schedule.
Previously, on November 27, 2025, the government had declared holidays on May 26 (Tuesday) and May 27 (Wednesday) under notification 4188-F(P2). However, the Governor has now declared May 28, 2026 (Thursday) as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Consequently, the holidays for May 26 and 27 stand cancelled, and both days will now be observed as regular working days for all government offices, schools, and institutions.

Action Steps for Employees
This sudden change will naturally affect the personal plans of state government employees. Those who had planned vacations for the end of May will need to adjust. If you had previously applied for leave via the IFMS portal for May 26 and 27, you must now cancel or modify those requests, as these are once again active working days.
Teaching and non-teaching staff should consult with their respective school or college authorities regarding any necessary adjustments to class routines or examination schedules. Please note that no leave application is required for May 28, as it is a declared public holiday.
Treasury and Salary Bill Processing
The rescheduling provides DDOs with two extra working days to process salary bills, as May 26 and 27 are now operational. Treasury offices will function normally on these days to handle transactions. To avoid any potential delays in salary disbursement due to the bank holiday on May 28, DDOs are advised to submit all pending bills to the treasury well in advance.
This notification, signed by Additional Chief Secretary P. K. Mishra, has been forwarded to the Principal Accountant General, Kolkata Pay & Accounts Offices, and all District Magistrates and Treasury Officers for immediate implementation. The order is effective immediately.
