Election Commission: Strict Action If BLO Teachers Harassed Election Commission Issued Double Directive
Election Commission: An important meeting was held between the Election Commission and the state administration regarding the work of Booth Level Officers (BLOs). With the Lok Sabha elections approaching, the Commission aims to complete the voter list revision or SIR (Summary Intensive Revision) process swiftly. In this context, considering both the convenience and challenges faced by teachers working as BLOs, the Election Commission has issued strict directives. On one hand, negligence in duty will not be tolerated, and on the other, assurance has been given to protect teachers from unnecessary harassment.
Strong Message to District Administration
A four-member delegation from the Commission, led by Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti, held meetings with District Magistrates and other administrative officials in Krishnanagar, Nadia, and Berhampore, Murshidabad on Wednesday. State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Agarwal and Additional CEO Dibyendu Das were also present at the meeting. It was made clear that election work is of utmost importance, and no laxity will be accepted.
Harassment of Teachers Will Not Be Tolerated
Several complaints have reached the Commission stating that teachers appointed as BLOs are facing pressure from school Headmasters or members of the Managing Committee. Specifically, there are allegations that when BLOs are out for form distribution or submission, they are marked as ‘absent’ in the school records. Regarding this, Gyanesh Bharti warned the district administration and gave clear instructions:
- Increased Surveillance: The district administration must keep a strict watch to ensure that teachers do not face any adversity in their own schools while performing BLO duties.
- No Interference: It must be ensured that school Headmasters or any member of the Managing Committee do not ‘disturb’ the BLO teachers.
Action Against BLOs for Negligence
The Commission has taken a tough stance not only for the benefit of teachers but also to speed up the work. It has been clearly stated that administrative action must be taken against those BLOs who are not working properly or are neglecting their duties. In essence, while the Commission has assured protection, it also wants a strict accounting of the work done.
