[PDF] Teacher’s Diary: New WBBSE Guidelines for HPRC & Classroom Evaluation 2026
Teacher’s Diary: In a significant move to reform the classroom evaluation process, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) issued a crucial notification on December 29, 2025. The Board has mandated the maintenance of a “Teacher’s Diary” for all teachers in recognized schools to ensure the successful implementation of the Holistic Progress Report Card (HPRC). The Board has explicitly stated that strict action will be taken against any teacher who fails to maintain this diary properly.
Why is the Teacher’s Diary Mandatory?
According to the WBBSE, the Teacher’s Diary is not just a record book but an integral part of the teaching-learning process. It serves as evidence for:
- The number of chapters, lessons, and concepts covered in class.
- The construction of knowledge during classroom transactions.
- Assessment of a learner’s behavioral changes and competency mastery rather than just content-based learning.
- Tracking the child’s holistic development (academic, social, and emotional).
Evaluation Schedule: Formative & Summative
The guidelines outline a structured evaluation system divided into Formative and Summative assessments:
1. Formative Evaluation (Continuous)
- Frequency: 9 times in an academic year for each subject.
- Schedule: Preferably conducted in the 3rd week of every month, followed by Remedial Teaching in the 4th week.
- Format: Written questionnaires, project work, verbal tests, model demonstrations, or physical activities.
2. Summative Evaluation
This will be conducted three times a year based on subject-linked cognitive and psychomotor learning outcomes:
- 1st Summative: 1st week of April.
- 2nd Summative: 1st week of August.
- 3rd Summative: 1st week of December.
New Pedagogical Frameworks: 4C, 5E & ICON Models
Teachers are now required to adopt modern teaching models for different classes. The diary must reflect the use of these frameworks:
- The 4C Model: Focusing on Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.
- The 5E Model: Comprising Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
- ICON Model: For interpretation and construction of knowledge.
Remedial Teaching & Teacher Responsibilities
A significant aspect of the new guideline is the emphasis on remedial teaching. Teachers must assess students’ strengths and weaknesses across dimensions like empathy and collaboration.
- Extra Classes: The class teacher must conduct remedial classes beyond their scheduled 25 classes per week.
- Strategy: Remediation involves three steps: Catch, Challenge, and Change. This involves encouraging students to ask questions, relating problems to daily life, and providing support to rectify previous ideas.
Structure of the Teacher’s Diary
The diary is divided into specific sections that must be updated regularly:
- Part A (Daily Activity): Records lesson topics, learning outcomes, and student attendance. It must be endorsed by the Head of the Institution once a week.
- Part B (Monthly Activities): Tracks co-curricular activities like Nature Study (Jan), Drama (Feb), Yoga (March), etc., as proposed by WBBSE.
- Part C: Records participation in community celebrations and national days.
- Part D: A reporting format for the Head of the Institution to submit to WBBSE regarding the performance of teachers.
The WBBSE has made it clear: “If any teacher does not maintain Teacher’s Diary, WBBSE will take steps against the concerned teachers”. Teachers are advised to download the new format and start maintaining their records immediately to ensure compliance with the HPRC norms.
