WBBSE Notice State Song: ‘Banglar Mati, Banglar Jal’ Now Mandatory in All State Schools Daily, Board Issues Strict Order

WBBSE Notice on State Song: The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has introduced a significant new directive in the state’s education system. Through a crucial notification issued on November 6, 2025, the board has made it mandatory for all state-aided and sponsored upper primary and secondary schools to sing the state song during the daily morning assembly. Headmasters of all schools have been instructed to implement this order with immediate effect, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the daily routine of lakhs of students across the state.

Key Contents of the Notification

The notification, bearing the number D.S.(Aca)/859/N/11 and signed by Ritabrata Chatterjee, the Deputy Secretary (Academic) of WBBSE, clearly states that the song ‘Banglar Mati, Banglar Jal’, penned by Rabindranath Tagore, must be sung mandatorily during the morning assembly every day.

This directive has been issued in accordance with a previous memo from the Department of School Education dated September 22, 2025 (Memo No. 1377-SE/S/10M-04/2025). The use of the word “mandatorily” in the circular underscores the seriousness of the instruction, implying that no leniency or negligence from any school authority will be tolerated in its implementation. Heads of all recognised institutions have been asked to take “necessary action” to strictly comply with this order.

Significance and Impact

The West Bengal government recently declared Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Banglar Mati, Banglar Jal’ as the official State Song. This song is considered a powerful symbol of Bengal’s cultural heritage, unity, and identity. By making its recitation compulsory at the school level, the state government and the WBBSE have taken a definitive step towards institutionalising this decision.

It is expected that this initiative will instil a deep sense of respect and unity towards Bengal’s culture, heritage, and soil among students from a young age. By starting their day with this song, they will get an opportunity to express their love and duty towards the state, which is expected to play a vital role in fostering cultural pride among them.

To Whom Has the Directive Been Sent?

To emphasise the importance of this order and ensure its proper implementation, the Board has circulated copies of the notification not just to the heads of schools but also to the highest-ranking officials in the state’s education hierarchy. The list of recipients includes:

  • The Principal Secretary, Department of School Education
  • The Commissioner of School Education, Government of West Bengal
  • The District Inspector (D.I.) of Schools (SE) of all districts
  • All Deputy Secretaries and Regional Officers of the Board

Through this widespread communication, the Board aims to ensure that the directive reaches every corner of the state and is strictly adhered to at all administrative levels.
