Using Google Pay or PhonePe? These New UPI Rules Are a Must-Read!

New UPI Rules: Today, August 1, 2025, several new rules for using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have come into effect in India. Announced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the primary goal of these changes is to make the UPI system more secure, faster, and reliable. If you use Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or any other UPI app, it is very important for you to be aware of these new regulations. Let’s take a detailed look at the changes:

1. New Limit for Balance Checks

From now on, users can check their account balance a maximum of 50 times per day on each UPI app. This means if you have two different apps, you can check your balance 50 times from each. However, the good news is that your current account balance will be displayed on the screen after every successful transaction. This will reduce the need to check the balance separately and will decrease the load on the servers.

2. Rule for Viewing Linked Accounts

A limit has also been set for viewing which bank accounts are linked to your UPI ID. Starting today, the list of linked accounts can be viewed a maximum of 25 times per day on each app. This limit is considered sufficient for general users.

3. Changes in Timings for Auto-Pay and Monthly Installments

This is a significant change for users who use the Auto-Pay service for various subscriptions, bill payments, or EMIs. From now on, such automatic transactions will be processed only during the day’s ‘off-peak’ hours, avoiding busy times. These hours are:

  • Before 10:00 AM
  • Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
  • After 9:30 PM

This step will reduce the load on servers during peak hours and decrease the likelihood of transaction failures. Additionally, a maximum of four attempts (1 original + 3 retries) will be made for each auto-pay mandate.

4. Checking the Status of Pending Payments

Sometimes, after sending money, the transaction gets stuck and shows as ‘Pending’. To check the status of such transactions, you can now try a maximum of three times, with a minimum gap of 90 seconds between each attempt. This will help reduce unnecessary load on the system.

Other Important Changes

Beneficiary Name Verification: To enhance user security, the recipient’s registered name will now be clearly displayed on the screen before sending money, reducing the risk of sending funds to the wrong account.

Deactivation of Inactive UPI IDs: For security reasons, all UPI IDs that have been inactive for more than one year will be automatically deactivated.

These rules are not expected to cause any major inconvenience in the daily transactions of general users. Instead, they will make the UPI infrastructure smoother and more secure. So, there is no need to panic; stay aware of the new rules and continue to enjoy the benefits of digital transactions.
