Voter Card Update: Is Aadhaar Mandatory for Voter Card Correction? Election Commission Big Announcement, Know Details
Voter Card Update: Significant guidelines have been released by the Election Commission regarding the correction of voter information or Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. The new directive places special emphasis on the usage and importance of the Aadhaar card in updating voter card details. This step is crucial for the preparation of an error-free voter list ahead of upcoming electoral activities.
Role of Aadhaar in Voter Information Correction
According to the latest information released by the Commission, the use of the Aadhaar card is becoming practically mandatory for correcting any errors in the voter card. Specifically, if a voter wishes to update their mobile number or change their photograph, they must undergo an Aadhaar authentication process.
- E-Sign & OTP: For any correction application, the applicant must verify the OTP through an ‘E-Sign’ process to submit the form. This helps in verifying the authenticity of the data.
Supreme Court Directive & Aadhaar as a Document
Adhering to the Supreme Court’s directive, the Election Commission has clarified the use of the Aadhaar card as an acceptable document in the voter list revision process.
- Alternative Document: If a citizen does not possess any other valid proof of identity, the Aadhaar card can be used as a last resort document to include their name in the voter list.
- Identity Proof: However, it is important to note that the Aadhaar card will only be treated as a document for ‘Identity Proof’. It will not be considered as proof of citizenship or permanent address.

Clarification Regarding Form Submission Confusion
There was some confusion among BLOs regarding the deadline for form submission, with many believing the work had to be completed by the 25th. The Commission has clarified this matter:
- The request to complete work between the 25th and 28th was strictly for smaller booths with a voter count between 500 and 600. This strategy was adopted solely to reduce the load on the server.
- For larger booths or densely populated areas, the final deadline for form submission remains December 4.
Progress of Work
Sources from the Commission indicate that the work on revising the voter list in the state is proceeding in full swing. So far, 5,37,51,626 forms out of those submitted have been digitized and uploaded to the portal. Statistically, this accounts for approximately 70.14% of the total distributed forms. The Commission is working diligently to ensure the publication of an accurate voter list.
