West Bengal DA Hike: The delay in implementing dearness allowance (DA) for West Bengal state government employees has sparked fresh controversy. Malay Mukherjee, General Secretary of the Confederation of State Government Employees, has voiced strong resentment over the government’s procrastination. According to him, despite repeated promises, employees are consistently being deprived of their legitimate rights.

During the state budget, the Finance Minister announced in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that state employees would receive an additional 4% DA, effective from April 2026. However, with April already behind us, the lack of an official notification has led to widespread dissatisfaction. Many employees feel frustrated that their April salaries did not reflect this hike.

Malay Mukherjee argues that promises made on the floor of the Legislative Assembly should be implemented promptly. This administrative foot-dragging is demoralizing the workforce. He further highlighted that the government lacks a clear roadmap to bridge the massive gap between state and central government DA rates.

Impact on State Government Employees

This ongoing uncertainty is directly impacting the financial stability and daily lives of employees. With the rising cost of essential commodities, the delay in receiving DA is seen as an insult to the workforce. Employees maintain that DA is not charity; it is a fundamental legal right.

Such administrative lethargy also risks hampering government operations. Malay Mukherjee termed the situation “shameful” and “unfortunate,” questioning the administration’s intent. When a commitment made by the Finance Minister in the Chief Minister’s presence remains unfulfilled, it creates a crisis of trust.

While central employees are looking forward to the 8th Pay Commission, West Bengal workers are still fighting for 6th Pay Commission arrears and the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission.
