WB SIR Date: When the Election Commission Announced for SIR in West Bengal, What Was Known About Acceptable Documents

WB SIR Date: Although the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list was scheduled to begin in West Bengal, it has not yet started. The process is delayed due to certain disagreements between the Election Commission and the state government. In this blog post, we will discuss the latest information regarding the voter list revision, the potential start date, and the required documents in detail.
Why is the voter list revision process delayed?
The main disagreement between the Election Commission and the state government is over the base year for the voter list.
- Election Commission’s Proposal: The commission wants to start the revision process based on the 2003 voter list, as a comprehensive revision was last conducted in that year.
- State Government’s Objection: The state government wants the process to be based on the voter list published in January 2025.
Due to this conflict, the matter has reached the Supreme Court. The state government’s lawyer, Gopal Shankar Narayan, informed the Supreme Court that the Election Commission had sent a letter to the state government on August 8th, indicating the commencement of SIR. The state government had initially requested a two-year delay for the process or the use of the 2025 voter list.
When might this process start?
According to the current situation, there is very little chance of the voter list revision work starting before Durga Puja. It is believed that the process might begin after Bhai Phota, as there are no major festivals after it except for Jagaddhatri Puja. If the Election Commission provides a satisfactory response in the Supreme Court, SIR could start in West Bengal right after Bhai Phota.
What documents might be required?
The exact documents required for the voter list revision have not yet been clearly announced. Whether linking the Aadhaar card will be mandatory, or if any other additional documents will be needed, will be clarified through a notification from the Election Commission a few days before the process begins.
The voter list revision is a very important process in West Bengal. Although it is being delayed due to some political and administrative reasons, it is hoped that the process will start soon. All eligible citizens are urged to participate in this process. Keep an eye on the official website of the Election Commission for the latest information.
