Janmashtami Holiday: Holiday Changed to Saturday, August 16th, Not Friday

Janmashtami Holiday: Finally, putting an end to all speculation, the state government has changed the holiday date for Janmashtami. According to the previous announcement, the holiday was scheduled for August 15, 2025 (Friday). However, as per the new notification, this holiday will now be observed on Saturday, August 16, 2025. This change creates an opportunity for a long weekend for state government employees and other associated institutions.
This decision was announced on August 14, 2025, through Notification No. 3037-F(P2) from the Finance Department (Audit Branch). The notification clearly states that based on available information, the State Government has made this new decision and declared August 16, 2025, as a holiday under the N.I. Act, 1881.
Who is covered by this holiday?
This holiday will be applicable to the following institutions:
- All State Government Offices
- Local Bodies
- Statutory Bodies
- Boards, Corporations, and undertakings owned or controlled by the State Government
- All educational institutions (including primary and high schools)
- Other offices/institutions under the control of the Government of West Bengal
As a result of this holiday, state government employees will get an extra day off, which will help them celebrate the Janmashtami festival well and spend time with family and friends. Since August 15th is already a national holiday for India’s Independence Day, and it is followed by Sunday, another holiday, many can now plan for trips with three consecutive days off.
