Where the 8th Pay Commission stands

The Government of India constituted the 8th Central Pay Commission by Resolution F. No. 01-01/2025-E.III(A) dated 3 November 2025, with Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as chairperson, Prof. Pulak Ghosh as part-time member and Pankaj Jain as member-secretary. It accepted memoranda online from 5 March to 15 June 2026 and is now meeting employees’ associations across the country. Its recommendations are due within 18 months of its constitution, which is by early May 2027.

No fitment factor, pay matrix or date of effect has been decided. Those come only with the government’s decision on the report.

What it means for West Bengal employees

The 8th CPC covers Central Government employees and pensioners, not state government staff. West Bengal has its own 7th Pay Commission, constituted by Resolution No. 2657-F(P1) dated 22.07.2026, which may take the Centre’s decision on the 8th CPC into account. The Central terms of reference themselves ask the commission to consider the impact on state finances, because states usually adopt the Central recommendations with some changes.
