Timeline of judgments, orders and notices

  1. Supreme Court order

Untainted SSC teachers may continue till 31 May 2027

Reported: a bench led by Justice Sanjay Kumar extended the service of about 17,000 teachers of the 2016 panel who were not found tainted, so the State can complete fresh recruitment, and called it the final opportunity.

  2. Supreme Court review judgment

TET stays mandatory for serving teachers; deadline moved to 31 August 2028

State of U.P. v. Anjuman Ishaat-e-Taleem Trust (2026 INSC 597), Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan. The review petitions of states and teachers were dismissed, but under Article 142 the time to qualify TET was raised from two to three years, to 31.08.2028. States were asked to hold TET preferably twice a year; no further extension will be entertained.

  3. WBSSC

SLST 2025: document verification and interviews begin

Reported: the School Service Commission started document verification and interviews for the Classes 9–12 assistant teacher posts of the second SLST.

  4. Supreme Court order

Untainted teachers’ service extended to 31 August 2026

Reported: the Supreme Court accepted the Board of Secondary Education’s application and allowed 15,403 teachers of the 2016 panel not found tainted to continue until 31.08.2026, as fresh recruitment had been delayed by writ petitions.

  5. Calcutta High Court

    32,000 primary teachers’ jobs upheld

Reported: a division bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Ritabrata Kumar Mitra set aside the single-bench order of 2023. It held that irregularity in every appointment had not been proved and that dismissal after nine years would be unjust; the teachers need not sit a fresh selection.

  6. WBSSC

Second SLST held: 7 and 14 September 2025

The written test for Classes 9–10 was held on 07.09.2025 and for Classes 11–12 on 14.09.2025, for 35,726 assistant teacher posts.

  7. Supreme Court judgment

TET made mandatory for in-service teachers

Anjuman Ishaat-e-Taleem Trust v. State of Maharashtra (2025 INSC 1063), Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan. Teachers of Classes 1–8 with more than five years of service left must qualify TET within two years to continue in service; those with less may continue till retirement but cannot be promoted without TET. The directions apply to non-minority schools; whether minority schools are covered was placed before the Chief Justice for a possible larger bench.

  8. WBSSC notification

Fresh recruitment notified: second SLST 2025

Reported: the West Bengal Central School Service Commission notified the second SLST for 35,726 assistant teacher posts in Classes 9–12, meeting the Supreme Court’s 31 May deadline.

  9. Supreme Court order

Untainted Class 9–12 teachers may continue till fresh appointments

Reported: the Court let assistant teachers of the 2016 panel not found tainted keep teaching, so students would not suffer, and directed the State and the Commission to advertise fresh recruitment by 31.05.2025 and finish it by 31.12.2025. Group C and D staff were not given this relief.

  10. Supreme Court judgment

    Entire 2016 SSC selection cancelled

State of West Bengal v. Baishakhi Bhattacharyya (Chatterjee) (2025 INSC 437), Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar. The Court upheld the High Court’s cancellation of the whole 2016 selection for Classes 9–12 teachers and Group C and D staff, finding large-scale manipulation and a cover-up. Tainted candidates must refund their salaries; others lose their jobs but keep what they were paid, may return to previous government posts, and may sit the fresh selection with age relaxation. Disabled candidates continue until fresh appointments.

  11. Calcutta High Court

High Court sets aside the whole 2016 SSC selection

The special division bench’s judgment of 22.04.2024 declared the 2016 selection process void. It is the judgment the Supreme Court upheld on 03.04.2025.

The 2016 recruitments behind both cases

The School Service Commission’s SLST 2016 filled Class 9–12 teacher and Group C and D posts; the Board of Primary Education appointed primary teachers on the basis of TET 2014. Writ petitions alleging irregularities in both followed from December 2016.

The three cases in brief

The 26,000 SSC case. On 3 April 2025 the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court’s judgment of 22 April 2024 cancelling the whole 2016 selection of Class 9–12 teachers and Group C and D staff (2025 INSC 437). Teachers not found tainted were allowed to keep teaching while a fresh selection is held; that period has been extended, most recently, as reported, to 31 May 2027. The second SLST was held in September 2025.

The 32,000 primary teachers case. A single bench cancelled the appointments of about 32,000 primary teachers in May 2023. On 3 December 2025 a division bench set that order aside, so the appointments stand.

TET for serving teachers. The Supreme Court held on 1 September 2025 that teachers of Classes 1–8 must qualify TET to continue in service or be promoted. Its review judgment of 29 May 2026 kept the rule and gave teachers until 31 August 2028 (2026 INSC 597).
